This request did not seem to be so out of the ordinary to me, as I have seen many sergeants with my time in receive BAH. In my opinion, the Corps needs to take a long look at who it allows to live on their own. We’ve all seen the privates first class who marry too soon and wind up divorced and in serious debt by the age of 20. It’s sad to say, but I really don’t think I will subject myself to any more time living in the barracks than I’ve already agreed to, regardless of how much money the Corps puts in front of my face or how bad it needs to retain Marines with my experience. For a long time now, I’ve believed that there is too much weight given to a person’s rank with no consideration of their age at all when it comes to off-duty privileges. Unless you’ve been punished with a rank reduction or meritoriously promoted, I don’t think rank is a good indicator of the quality of a Marine, especially in the lower regions of the rank structure. And there’s no way to tell whether a corporal you’re looking at is a shitbag who got demoted from sergeant or a stellar Marine who picked it up at the last meritorious board. All you can tell is that most likely, it’s Marine who has been in the Marine Corps about 3-5 years.Even though I’m a member of the Foreign Service, the ‘diplomatic corps’, I recently found myself surrounded by members of the United States Marine Corps in a helicopter which bore a striking resemblance to the ones you see in Vietn-era war movies.
